32. Dennis Daugaard was honored in 2019 by the Trail of Governors with a life-size bronze statue by sculptor James Michael Maher. The statue portrays Daugaard signing “I love you” in American Sign Language. In the other hand, Daugaard holds a shovel, evoking his enthusiasm for tree-planting, his commitment to maintenance and repair, and his leadership during the 2011 Missouri River floods. That hand is also pinching a penny, a reference to his well-known frugality. The sculpture was placed on Governors Drive, near the eastern shore of Capitol Lake.
