This weekend, current and former legislators will gather for an all-legislator reunion in Pierre, a celebration that is the culmination of commemoration of the 100th legislative session.
Just in time for the weekend’s events, the South Dakota Historical Society Press has released a new book, A Legislature of Citizens: South Dakota’s First 100 Legislative Sessions.
The book features an introduction by longtime Capitol reporter Terry Woster, and includes a compilation of articles, most of which were previously published by the Press.
Articles include Bernie Hunhoff’s feature on the 100th Session, which is reprinted from South Dakota Magazine‘s January/February 2025 issue. Others cover topics such as South Dakota’s early statehood status as a divorce haven; the history of liquor legislation; votes on women’s suffrage and Indian suffrage; the birth of initiative and referendum; the progressive legislative program of Governor Peter Norbeck; and the water politics of the 1970s.
The book is available for ordering now, at this link.
