In South Dakota, candidates for Governor and LG have run together on a ticket since 1974. (For a history of LG selection since statehood, see this page.) Here are the Republican and Democratic tickets since 1974:

1986George S. Mickelson – Brookings (East River) – Former speaker of the house and attorney.Walter Dale Miller – New Underwood (West River) – House majority leader and former speaker, and a rancher.Lars Herseth – Houghton (East River) – House minority leader and farmer.Ted Thoms – Sioux Falls (East River) – county commissioner and businessman.
1990Incumbent Mickelson renominated.Incumbent Miller renominated.Bob Samuelson – Faith (West River) – State senator and rancher.Shirley Halleen – Sioux Falls (East River) – former state representative and teacher. First woman to appear on a gubernatorial ticket.
1994Bill Janklow – Brandon (East River) – Former governor.Carole Hillard – Rapid City (West River) – State representative and volunteer; her family owned Rapid Chevrolet.Jim Beddow – Mitchell (East River) – President of Dakota Wesleyan University.Jim Abbott – Yankton (East River) – Former state representative and businessman.
1998Incumbent Janklow renominated.Incumbent Hillard renominated.Bernie Hunhoff – Yankton (East River) – Senate minority leader and owner of South Dakota Magazine.Elsie Meeks – Interior (West River) – businesswoman and economic development official. First Native American to appear on a gubernatorial ticket.
2002Mike Rounds – Pierre (East River) – Former senate majority leader and businessman.Dennis Daugaard – Dell Rapids (East River) – State senator and non-profit executive.Jim Abbott – Vermillion (East River) – President of the University of South Dakota, former state representative and businessman.Mike Wilson – Rapid City (West River) – former state representative and attorney.
2006Incumbent Rounds renominated.Incumbent Daugaard renominated.Jack Billion – Sioux Falls (East River) – Former state representative and orthopedic surgeon.Eric Abrahamson – Rapid City (West River) – School board member and historian.
2010Dennis Daugaard – Dell Rapids (East River) – Lieutenant governor and non-profit executive.Matt Michels – Yankton (East River) – Former house speaker and attorney.Scott Heidepriem – Sioux Falls (East River) – Senate minority leader and attorney; he had represented Miller in the state legislature as a Republican.Ben Arndt – Sioux Falls (East River) – Businessman. A Republican when he was selected; he changed registrations to accept the nomination.

2018Kristi Noem – Castlewood (East River) – Congresswoman, farmer/rancher and small businesswoman.Larry Rhoden – Union Center (West River) – State representative and former house majority leader, and a rancher.Billie Sutton – Burke (West River) – Senate minority leader, investment advisor and rancher.Michelle Lavallee – Sioux Falls (East River) – marketing consultant.
