New Trail of Governors statues

New statues (L to R in first picture) are Ralph Herseth, M. Q. Sharpe, and William McMaster.

The life-size bronze statue of Gov. William McMaster by sculptor James Van Nuys portrays McMaster seated on a park bench. A gasoline can at McMaster’s feet recalls his efforts to take on “unconscionable” retail gasoline prices.  The statue is slated to be placed at the intersection of Pierre Street and Sioux Avenue in downtown Pierre.
The life-size bronze statue of Gov. Ralph Herseth, by sculptor James Michael Maher, portrays the farmer Herseth is his work clothes. It is slated to be placed near the State Capitol grounds at the intersection of Broadway Avenue and South Dakota Boulevard.
The life-size bronze statue of Gov. M. Q. Sharpe by sculptors Lee Leuning and Sherri Treeby pays tribute to Sharpe’s role in developing the Missouri River dams and portrays Sharpe in fishing gear, holding a Northern Pike. It is slated to be placed near Lake Sharpe, in front of the American Legion Post 8 “cabin” at the end of Pierre Street on Island View Drive.
