Dr. John E. Miller’s death on May 1 is being felt across the South Dakota history community. Several nice articles have been written about Miller, which I’m compiling at this post:
Jon Lauck, another key leader in South Dakota history, was a great friend and frequent collaborator with Miller. Prolific writer that he is, Lauck has written several tributes. He shared his memories in a Facebook post that he allowed me to repost. In the Pierre Capital Journal he wrote “Mr. South Dakota History Dies” and in the Brookings Register he wrote “S.D. Historian Miller Passed into History.” Lauck also shared his thoughts on South Dakota Public Radio.
South Dakota Magazine posted “Remembering a Small Town Boy,” a nice piece on Miller by John Andrews, another of Miller’s former students who has written many great pieces on SD History.
The Argus Leader features an article by Jonathan Ellis, himself a South Dakota history enthusiast: “John E. Miller, SDSU historian, Laura Ingalls Wilder expert, dies.”
The Pierre Capital Journal covered Miller’s passing with an article: “John E. Miller, longtime SDSU historian of the Midwest, dies at 75.”
Tom Lawrence, a longtime reporter and former student, shared an article he wrote about Miller after listening to him at a history seminar in October 2018.
