“Run with the Govs” slated for June 17

Gov. Frank Farrar on the Trail of Governors. A physical fitness enthusiast, Farrar participated in the Run with the Govs each year until his death in 2021.

The annual “Run with the Govs,” a 3.5-mile run or walk, will be held in Pierre during its annual Oahe Days celebration, on June 17, 2023. The Run takes participants past each of the thirty-one bronze statues on the capital city’s Trail of Governors.

It will be a first for the event, as it is not being held in conjunction with the annual unveiling of additions to the Trail of Governors. That’s because last year’s unveiling completed the Trail, which now portrays all thirty-one former South Dakota governors. New statues going forward will be added as governors leave office, beginning with current Gov. Kristi Noem.

The Run with the Govs is a event for serious runners, but also for those interested in South Dakota history, and even for families looking to get out during a nice South Dakota summer day. Even this blogger, not known for an enthusiasm for walking or running, has done the walk several times.

Sign up is available in advance or on the morning of the Run, which begins at 8:30 am. Find out more here.
