Mitchell Republic features 1895 theft of SD state treasury

The theft in 1895 of the entire South Dakota state treasury by the outgoing treasurer, W. W. Taylor, remains one of the most notorious crimes in the state’s history.

This weekend, the Mitchell Republic published an excellent history of the episode, by reporter Erik Kaufman. The article includes an interview with State Historian Dr. Ben Jones, and also draws upon the excellent 1986 article from South Dakota History, “A State Treasurer Defaults: The Taylor Case of 1895 by C. Perry Armin.”

I would encourage you to read Kaufman’s article here.
