The news came last week of the passing of Tom Lawrence, a longtime reporter who spent the bulk of his career in South Dakota. Tom’s most recent beat was at The South Dakota Standard, a left-leaning news and commentary site that he co-founded with John Tsitrian.
I came to know Tom during my years in Governor Daugaard’s office, and always found him to be thoughtful and thorough. He shared my interest in South Dakota’s political history, and that interest showed through in his work on The South Dakota Standard, where many of his pieces were more historical essays that news or opinion pieces.
Tom will of course be missed by his family and friends, but the loss of his historical memory is also a loss for our entire state.
